Way to Go, Republicans!

This past week has brought us the Michael Steele vs. Rush Limbaugh drama. Our Democratic friends across the aisle are enjoying every minute of it, as well they should.

Rush Limbaugh on Monday fired back at critics of his fiery weekend speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference, and his biggest target was not on the left.

The conservative talk host saved his sharpest words for Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele. The barbs came in response to Steele's assertion that Limbaugh's challenges to the GOP are "incendiary" and "ugly."

The main source of the problem is that both men are 100% correct. Michael Steele is right: Limbaugh is an entertainer first and foremost, and his schtick is being "incendiary" and "ugly". It's the outrageous statements he's been making since Day One that have gotten him all that attention, the $5 Million / Year salary, and the book deals. He's been milking it for all it's worth.

On Monday, Rush said Steele appears more supportive of President Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi than of his own party.

Limbaugh also accused the RNC chair of disloyalty, since he'd appeared as a guest on Limbaugh's show during his failed 2006 Senate run in Maryland.

"My parents taught me when I was growing up that you always stood behind people who defended you, that you never abandon people who stood up for you and defended you against assault," Limbaugh said.

Mr. Limbaugh is 100% correct about this. For many conservatives, Mr. Steele has been quite the disappointment. While he was a FOX contributor, he talked a good game. Of course, this is what politicians do. There was a chance (between slim and none) that Steele just might make meaningful reform of the GOP. It's since become obvious that Steele is now carrying water for the neo-"cons".

Why else would he be focussing on "hip-hop" campaigns, and making attempts to be "with it" that are only making him look like a fool to the very young 'uns he's trying to draw to the GOP? He has nothing else to offer!

Why else would he be acting so indifferently to Pelosi & Co when it comes to gov't spending, as Limbaugh pointed out? We've seen eight years of neo-"con" malfeasance to answer that question. Why else would the chairman of the RNC be hoping that Pres. Obama succeeds? Obama's agenda is the neo-"con" agenda. That became obvious over a year ago when the neo-"cons" offered up Roll Over Rudy Giuliani for the GOP nom.

Rush Limbaugh would even have a point, but it's way too late for that now. Limbaugh blew his credibility as an independent voice of conservativism 25 years, two books, and two seasons on TV, ago. He blew his credibility when all he could do was snip, snip, snip at Bill Clinton without offering up any rationale based on either conservative principles or Constitutional grounds. His words ring extremely hollow these days.

Keep it up, Republicans, and you just might blow the 2010 mid-terms and set us up for the Obama II misadministration. Maybe a real, genuine conservative party may emerge from the self-destruction of the GOP. However, I doubt it.

I have long suspected that Election 2008 was America's last chance to preserve its future existance as a free, constitutional republic, and its status as a First World country. More and more, to my regret, it looks like I just might be right.

Oh well, I still have family (distant relatives) in Europe, so at least I can get out when the gettin' gets good. I wonder if Svetlana or Sovtek will still be hiring?

Gold looks like it'll soon be a "buy" again. Time to make some more $$$$ soon. :-)

Speaking as somebody who considered buying gold for investment purposes:

- Definitely missed the boat on that one - best time to buy probably would have been when it was around $700-750 in mid-November. I don't know where it's gonna go, but I've never seen it go much higher than it is now.
- Further to the above, that trough was after a peak of close to US$1,000 early last year. if I had bought $5K worth of gold around that time, I'd have lost $1,500 before gaining it all back... . Even in these economic conditions it's too volatile an investment for me to be going for. And this is coming from the guy who thinks he managed to pull off some well-timed currency speculation, sorta.

Keep an eye on it. Gold is going much higher. This gov't spending is utterly irresponsible, and it will result in inflation like hell won't have it. That might take a year or so to really kick in, but I think we'll see $2,000 / Oz in the near future.

I just hope there's a country left to spend it in once Obama/Pelosi/Reid/Dean get done with it.
